When you are throwing the food away you are not helping anyone. Finding a way to use food is always better than throwing it out. Donating the food to the charities is not going to earn you any money but it will make sure that the food is used instead of just thrown away. Donating to charities will earn you a good reputation as the local community will appreciate it. People love coming to stores that give back to the community and you will not be throwing the food in the bins.
